Oliver Hazard Perry, commander of the American squadron at Lake Erie, leaving the battered Lawrence and transferring his flag to the Niagara. This spectacular piece of bravery transformed apparent defeat into a decisive victory for the Americans, as the undamaged Niagara was able to round up the disabled British ships.
